Hydrological Cycle Earth Systems

The hydrological cycle is a complex yet balanced cycle. What happens if you change one of the key actions in the cycle? Try it!

Notice two things about the changes you made:

1) The hydrological cycle is a closed system. Any change in the water flows in one region will be counterbalanced by changes elsewhere. A drought in Africa means that another region is receiving more rain than usual.

2) Many changes are self-perpetuating, assuming no external factors. Increasing the amount of rainfall in a region puts more water into circulation there, thus increasing runoff, evaporation, and condensation—and thus more rain! Wind patterns can break this cycle or allow it to continue.
