At the height of World War II, the U.S. Navy captured a German U-boat submarine prowling off the waters of Africa. The American efforts to capture the U-505, and the German struggle to prevail instead, illuminate the human experience of duty, courage, and survival during wartime. This site features two games and an interactive timeline about that fateful day:

  • Find the U-505: As an American sailor, use cutting-edge (for 1944) technologies to track down the U-boat.
  • Command the U-505: As skipper of the U-505, use your wits to attack the Americans and evade capture.
  • Capture! An interactive timeline featuring oral histories by the men who where there.

This simulation game challenges children to design a satellite that will send TV signals to places far across the country. Central to the design process is exploring the ways that high technologies are the products of human ingenuity—and that Littleton, Colorado is a community rich in such inventive people.

The new Oakland Bay Bridge, currently under construction through 2007, is designed to withstand severe earthquakes. To explore the challenges facing bridge designers and builders, eduweb developed several interactive modules exploring the science, technology and people involved in the project:

  • Design a bridge that can withstand a Maximum Seismic Event—then it to see how it fares!
  • Explore the people and technologies involved in the new bridge.

The DuPage Children's Museum was taking their popular in-school design program to the Web—but how? Technical challenges abounded, from school-age computers to district firewalls. But after extensive development and formative testing, we had an innovative and award-winning site. At school or home, kids tackle design challenges with the help of a real engineer, who consults with each kid live, via an interactive whiteboard and chat room. Empowering for kids (and engineers), this program is available at no cost for schools and homeschoolers.
