Scouting the Settlers

The French Settlement of Nouvelle France on the St. Lawrence River.

Talking with Micmac manYou find a Micmac native who shares enough common words with you to communicate.

He tells you, "Thanks to these French and their greed for furs, our tribe has grown wealthy. No longer must we follow the fish and the game—we stay in one place and trap for furs. Never have we known such plenty."

He also says this: "It is true these French sometimes try to cheat us. They trade us a gun for its length in furs. The next time we see them, they have made longer guns!"Attribution

Why do the French have such need for furs? Why do the Micmac want to give up their nomadic traditions?

Question the Micmac further.

You feel feverish and sit down to rest.
