Scouting the Settlers

Two WyandotsThe French Settlement at Sainte-Marie

You know enough words in Wyandot to communicate. You ask a native to explain what you see.

She says: "These French missionaries are good and kind. They share food and care for our sick. They are as quick to learn from us as to teach us."

Another native argues: "They care for the sick—of course they do. Who but the French brought with such terrible diseases?"

She replies: "Yes they did bring disease. But they also have taught us to read and write."

He argues: "They brought brandy!"

She says, "At this village, anyone who sells brandy is flogged!"

What is this writing and reading?

Learn about brandy and the native tribes of Canada.

Follow the people into the lodge.
