Trish with old camera

Trish opened her round fish-mouth, gaping at me. "You think he wanted to make his painting look real--like a photograph? You must think he was a pretty bad artist."

"Well..." I said.

"In fact," Trish continued, "once the camera was invented, artists weren't as interested in creating super-realistic paintings. Lots of artists before Van Gogh did try to paint things so they looked exactly right. But Van Gogh and his friends were more interested in experimenting with other ideas."

So why don't you take another look at the painting and tell me what you think?"

You're trapped in this painting!

"Was he trying to...

...Capture the momentary effects of sunlight and color?"

...Express his own mood or emotion with strong colors and brushstrokes?"
