Trish gaped at me. "Are you kidding?" she asked. "You can barely see the brushstrokes made by Hans Holbein (1497-1543) in this painting."

"Like many master painters," Trish added, "Holbein's goal was to create textures that looked as real as the real thing. The flesh looks smooth and warm, the fabric falls in silky folds and the gold glitters. To leave behind brushstrokes would have been unthinkable!"

"You're right," I said. "I don't know what I was thinking."

"Don't sweat it," Trish said. "Just try again."
